Everywhere you look something different catches the eye."

"Basic materials such as brass, timber, vinyl and rock predominate in the fit-out. These down-to-earth materials make patrons feel at ease, and are also low maintenance," stated Warren. "Colour also links the interiors – subtle color accents wash through the spaces, with reds, oranges, and greens used extensively."

"Artworks on most walls, generous outdoor spaces, fireplaces, café-type seating and private niche spaces all offer something different," he added. "Given the hotel's current patronage – from the old-timers, to the fresh young things – the Southern Cross' iconic reputation is only likely to gain momentum over the coming years."

Holiday living – Lordens apartment complex design by Graeme Shaw

"With this complex, for the first time the city is reaching out to the harbor, and the theatre is the focal point for reuniting the two sectors. This project carries with it a responsibility for bringing people to the water's edge, and a lot of planning has gone into creating a public domain," Woodland said. "On such a beautiful site, the visual character of the building is particularly important. It can be seen from all around the harbor and from the town."

"And, because the center is so visible from the harbor, we wanted to create an undulating form that relates to the undulations of the land behind the town. The folded shape of the building is designed to loosely follow the silhouette of the local topography," added Woodland.

For present and future - Southern Cross Station design
