materials, designer Lorna Wallace was contracted to renovate
the featured kitchen which needs to restore the 1930s décor.
"In the kitchen, a
marble backsplash – which has an Art Deco profile – is a prominent feature.
Marble is also used throughout the house to create a visual link between
rooms," said Wallace.
"We chose not to
use marble for the countertops, because it might have looked slightly excessive
in what is otherwise a relaxed family house. Instead, I selected an exfoliated
granite. This is black granite that has been heat treated, which removes the
top layer of crystals, giving the appearance of a dark gray concrete or slate.
But granite is a better work surface than these materials,"
"I wanted the
kitchen and family area to be a contemporary, open space, unimpeded by beams.
The look of the ceiling is Art Deco, and relates to the appearance of the
pillars on the island, which add visual interest. These also provide a space to
keep cookbooks and magazines."
