As successful furniture
shop in Cambodia construction
materials informed, owners-architects Lise de Vito and Jim
Zack designed their kitchen in a modern sensibility, however, some
preservations are made for historical touches.
"Despite the
contemporary nature of our work, we are very aware of this city's architectural
heritage," said de Vito. "San Francisco is renowned for its historic
bay-window houses. Consequently, the house features a modern interpretation of
a bay window, at the end of the kitchen, which faces the street. The bay and a
skylight provide plenty of extra natural light."
"The steel jambs
of the low window protrude past the wall, so they frame the window and make it
look as though it has been punched out," added de Vito. "The glazing
on the right is actually three windows – the mullions are hidden behind steel
shelves, so it reads as a single pane."
The windows, and a wall of glazing in the dining area ensure the view can be enjoyed by day and night.
