the brief given to designer Lisa
Steinbach Schecter to renovate the above kitchen was a space that would combine
a strong Asian aesthetic with a Tuscan sensibility.
"The overriding impression in
this space is an Asian one," said Schecter. "Varied cabinet heights
and door panel styles echo architectural forms found in the east. Some of the
broader mullions are even reminiscent of the broad band of Obi sashes on a
traditional kimono.
"Similarly, an emphasis on horizontal forms – seen in the cabinet panels, mullions and even window fenestrations – all call to mind the Japanese shoji screens."
The Italian flair can be seen with the richness of the table
and cabinetry veneer. "We chose solid mahogany cabinet fronts for their
rich tone and solidity – and the fact that the wood complements the largely
green slate floors."
